Vedic astrology (Jyotish) is the traditional Hindu system of astrology, one of the six Vedangas. It reads the sky as it actually looks, using the sidereal zodiac, and it maps your life into planetary chapters with a timing system called Vimshottari Dasha.

DashaFlow uses the sidereal zodiac, which follows the actual star constellations rather than the seasonal calendar. Because Earth's axis wobbles slowly (about 24° over 2,000 years), your sidereal sign often lands one sign earlier than seasonal systems show. Vedic astrologers have read the sky this way for thousands of years, because it reflects where the planets actually sit among the stars.

We use the Swiss Ephemeris library, trusted by professional astrologers worldwide, with planetary positions accurate to sub-arcsecond precision. By default we use the Lahiri ayanamsa, the official Indian government standard.

The Vimshottari Dasha is Vedic astrology's 120-year system of planetary periods. Starting from your Moon's nakshatra at birth, it assigns each chapter of your life to a ruling planet, and each major period (Mahadasha) carries that planet's themes.

Birth time sets your Ascendant (the rising sign) and your house positions. Without it, we can still place most planets by sign. Your Moon's nakshatra and your dasha dates can shift within a single day, so a birth time makes those reliable. For the fullest chart, use the time on your birth record.
